Rare red squirrels in danger in village in Cumbria, NW England

A group of residents is actively trying to protect the red squirrel population in their village in Cumbria. Red squirrels in Cumbria are in danger of disappearing altogether and so it is vital to protect remaining populations whenever possible. The area around the village was totally denuded of all tree/bush cover due to opencast mining activities. They have only a very small area of woodland on the southern edge of their village for these squirrels. Earlier this month a housing developer cut-down 20 – 30% of their habitat (visit www.seered.co.uk Cumbrian trees). They are now fighting a planning application to build 51 houses within the last remaining woodland. See the Gallery for photos of these squirrels.
